Requirements
  • Completion of high school or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in the food safety or meat industries.
  • Knowledge of state and federal regulations regarding the handling and labeling of meat and poultry; livestock characteristics and normal behavior; livestock diseases and related symptoms; observation and sampling methods; facility and sanitation requirements; chemical use; insect and rodent control; personal hygiene; water supply requirements; humane slaughter; additive formulas; authorized proportions of regulated substances; injection sites and disease symptoms; motor vehicle operation; and travel to remote locations.
  • Ability to use a computer competently; establish and maintain effective working relationships while enforcing regulations; perform arithmetic calculations; follow instructions; read and interpret laws and regulations; prepare reports; identify disease characteristics and the use of drugs and hormones; and discern livestock breeds and sex.
  • Ability to meet the physical and working-condition requirements of the position, including walking, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, bending, stooping, detecting odors, maintaining clear speech and good vision, and working around hazardous pathogens, unpredictable live animals, knives, hooks, steam lines, sterilizers, slick floors, contagious disease, and foul odors.
  • Ability to have and maintain a valid Montana driver's license and safely operate a motor vehicle with an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to attend and successfully complete required federal workshops, seminars, and FSIS training, including the Inspection Methods course within one year of employment.
  • Ability to pass the fingerprint background check and meet credentialing requirements for access to USDA FSIS systems and the Public Health Information System.
Responsibilities
  • Perform regulatory oversight inside slaughter and processing plants for Sanitation Performance Standards, Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures, pathogen reduction verification, food security verification, economic adulteration, misbranding, and other consumer protections.
  • Use the automated Public Health Information System to update establishment profiles, select inspection tasks, enter information, and respond to system data.
  • Serve as a slaughter and/or processing inspector in red meat and/or poultry plants or departments, exercising judgment across the full range of assigned inspection functions.
  • Inspect live animals, carcasses, facilities, slaughter and processing operations, and finished products.
  • Collect product samples for laboratory testing, verify plant records, and inspect product labels and packaging.
  • Interpret federal and state regulations and take appropriate regulatory action.
  • Record findings and tasks in the federal database and document daily activities in weekly reports.
  • Travel extensively throughout the assigned region, including to remote locations and during inclement weather.
